En 1978 The Records se unieron al “The Be Stiff Tour” como teloneros de Rachel Sweet. Grabaron el sencillo “Starry Eyes” y firmaron con Virgin Records. Su álbum de debut “Shades in Bed” (también conocido como “The Records”) les dio una reputación, sobre todo en los EE.UU., donde “Starry Eyes” tuvo cierto éxito.

En 1980, Jude Cole (ex Moon Martin) se unió al grupo coincidiendo con la preparación de su segundo disco, “Crashes”, que incluye “Hearts in her Eyes”, una canción que Will y John escribieron originalmente para “The Searchers”. En 1981 grabaron su tercer y último álbum. The Records se disolvieron en 1982.
